Class Attire

Belly Dance: Hip scarf, leotards or leggings, bare feet or dance shoes. No jeans, baggy clothes, street clothes or sweat suits. Please acquire a set of finger cymbals for use in any level that includes cymbal playing (cymbals may be purchased at the studio). Level 3 dancers are required to wear ballet slippers.

Belly Aerobics, Belly Express and Zumba Express: Exercise clothes and gym shoes that are not worn outdoors.


Class Descriptions

BELLY DANCE 1: Basic belly dance technique and routine. Sessions alternate between offering an introduction to Veil and an introduction to Finger Cymbals. Please note: Level 1 must be taken two or more times including both themes (Veil and Finger Cymbals) before advancing to Level 2. Pre-requisite: no prior dance experience necessary

BELLY DANCE 2: Intermediate technique and combinations. Occasionally a dance routine will be included. Class theme varies, including Study of Arabic Rhythms or Advanced Finger Cymbals. Please bring your own veil and finger cymbals to every class. Pre-requisite: both themes of Level 1 and instructor approval

BELLY DANCE 3: Intermediate choreography, focusing completely on Classical Belly dance, this level Includes a special polishing of technique by incorporating ballet terms. The choreography will improve your classical oriental dance technique, turns, posture, & more! Please bring your own veil to every class and wear Ballet Slippers. Pre-requisite: 4 sessions of Level 2 and instructor approval

BELLY DANCE 4T: Advanced technique, combinations and exercises This is a great class for Level 3 dancers transitioning into Level 4 and for Level 4 dancers who want to keep their general dance skills sharp. Bring your veil and finger cymbals. Pre-requisite: 2 sessions (one full semester) of Level 3 and instructor approval

BELLY DANCE 4I: Art of Improvisation This is a great class for Level 3 and 4 dancers who want to master the art of dancing without a choreography!  We work on identifying and understanding Arabic dance rhythms, musical interpretation, how to dance to various sections within a classical routine, improving your dynamics and emotional expression, and will also include discussion of how to perform at various shows and other venues. Bring your veil and finger cymbals. Pre-requisite: 2 sessions (one full semester) of Level 3, one session of Level 4T and instructor approval

BELLY DANCE 4: Advanced choreography Class theme varies, including Classical Oriental, Modern Egyptian or various Folkloric dances. Student is expected to practice at home outside of class times. Pre-requisite: 2 sessions (one full semester) Level 3 and instructor approval

BELLY AEROBICS: Great low-impact aerobic workout incorporating belly dance movements. Includes warm-up, stretching, toning, lightweight dumbbells, aerobics, cool-down, abdominal and leg exercises. Exercise attire required, including gym shoes. Recommended for students at all levels for fitness and fun, as well as supplemental training for the serious dancer! Pre-requisite: no prior dance experience necessary (but please don't use this class to learn the basics of belly dance!)

LOTUS METHOD of Dance Therapy: The goddesses of ancient Egypt were protectors and healers. The roots of belly dance are found in the movements of those pharaonic times. The Lotus Method is a dance therapy class, using dance movements and body awareness, breathing techniques, and stretches that connect you from within to your outside world. If you have issues with stress, menopause, fertility, PMS, pain in shoulders, neck or lower back, or if you suffer from TMJ or arthritis, you will benefit from the soothing technqieus of ancient healing. Pre-requisite: no prior dance experience necessary (but please don't use this class to learn the basics of belly dance!)

COMPANY CLASS: This class is exclusively for members of the Jasmin Jahal Dance Company.
